Using A Virtualization Server To Save Costs And Energy

Virtualization technology is one of the hottest topics in information technology today. This technology has prompted an almost complete overhaul of the industry of computing. The benefits of virtualization technology are becoming more obvious as competition increases and the amount of global resources is steadily decreasing.

Virtualization combines hardware and software engineering to create virtual machines. In essence, this allows one computer server to function as many different computers, all virtual. This virtualization server can host as many as ten or more applications which would typically require ten individual and physical machines.

A dedicated virtual server will usually require a higher demand of CPUs, memory, and other hardware than a traditional computer, but does so with little to no extra power.

Why Businesses Choose To Go With A Virtualization Server

Many organizations and businesses are moving toward virtualization as a means of reducing power consumption and trimming space requirements. Traditional server farms take up a great deal of space. Many individual servers must be stored securely and safely in racks that take up precious space and resources. These server farms are located in huge facilities, where the machines generate massive amounts of heat and sophisticated cooling systems are needed to keep the machines up and running.

Virtualization gives companies access to their critical applications, allowing them to migrate information and streamline application deployment. Similarly, using virtualization gives companies the ability to respond more quickly to new or changing business demands and simplify their information technology operations.

Virtual machines can run multiple operating systems on one platform.

This means that instead of owning several computers to host a business’ critical applications, the company can use a virtualization server and share the hardware resources. Each separate partition on the server can serve a different function or have a different purpose for the business.

The system at the core of virtualization is the virtual machine monitor. This system acts as the translation and control system between the hardware and the virtual machines.

The virtual machine monitor must control the physical platform resources, including I/O mapping and memory translation.

Virtual machine monitors traditionally use paravirtualization and binary translation to do their work. These systems perform significantly more efficiently than physical machines.

Virtualization creates a virtual version of an information technology system. This may include a server, network resources, and storage devices. It allows a system to decouple a hardware host from the application and the information technology resources required to run it.

These are typically network access, the processor, and the memory operating system. A company can access multiple resources from a single virtualization server.

This has a couple of quality benefits. First, virtualization results in less energy consumption. Since fewer servers are being employed, this results in less physical hardware that needs to be powered. In turn, there is decreased electricity demand which results in less energy consumption. Similarly, less hardware equates to less upkeep that needs to be done. A smaller amount of machines means less maintenance and consequently less time caring for physical equipment.

The Difference Between Cloud Computing And Virtualization

While often confused, there is a difference between cloud storage solution and virtualization.

Cloud computing involves the storage of information and data on a network of remote computers. Users can access their information on these servers via the Internet. The advantage to cloud computing is that information can be retrieved from any computer that has an Internet connection. This is especially advantageous for organizations or companies that need quick connectivity across the globe. Yet, cloud computing services can be expensive and providers often charge significant fees.

Virtualization defines the physical structure of the computer system and is usually less expensive than cloud computing. Those who opt for virtualization may have to absorb upfront costs, but these will be defrayed over the life of the system.

Those who opt for cloud computing, however, will usually pay a fee based on the amount of storage they require. As the amount of data they need to store and their demands increase over time, so do their fees.

Virtualization can be divided into four primary categories: hardware, software, desktop, and storage. Hardware virtualization involves running multiple operating systems on one machine. Software virtualization involves virtualized software. Desktop virtualization occurs when a desktop’s OS, preferences, files, and applications are hosted somewhere else. Storage virtualization consolidates data in a central location, allowing access to multiple virtual private servers.

Virtualization is quickly becoming a primary means of accessing data and applications. The use of virtualization servers provides companies and organizations with the ability to meet their computing needs without a major investment in equipment.
